What Is the EQ Factor?

By Christine Rossell, MBA · Founder, Source EQ · August 25, 2026

Every staffing agency will tell you they screen candidates. Most of them mean license verification, a background check, and maybe a reference call or two. That's the baseline, and it matters, but it also isn't the reason a contract hire works out or falls apart in the first two weeks. The EQ Factor is the screening approach we built at Source EQ Staffing to look past the credential and toward the thing that actually predicts whether someone is going to show up, fit the team, and stay through the term.

The name is a nod to emotional intelligence, but it's less about a personality test and more about a practical question we ask before recommending anyone for a role: is this person actually going to work out here, not just be qualified to.

The Problem: Why Credential-Only Screening Fails

A license and a clean background check answer one question: is this person legally allowed to do this job. They don't answer whether the person communicates well under pressure, whether they've historically stayed through a full contract term or bailed early, or whether their pace and style actually fit the setting they're walking into.

This gap shows up constantly in healthcare staffing. Turnover and no-show rates in contract and travel roles have been a persistent, well documented problem across the industry, and facility leaders consistently point to fit, not competence, as the root cause. A nurse can be fully licensed and technically strong and still be the wrong placement for a fast paced ICU if their natural pace is slower and more methodical. Neither trait is a flaw. It's a mismatch, and mismatches are exactly what standard credential checks miss, because they were never built to catch them.

The cost of that gap isn't abstract. Every no-show or early exit means the vacancy reopens, the search restarts, and the team that was already stretched thin absorbs another gap on top of the one they thought was solved.

What the EQ Factor Actually Screens For

The EQ Factor sits on top of standard credentialing, not instead of it. Every candidate we place still goes through license verification, background checks, and the compliance work you'd expect from any legitimate staffing partner. What we add is a layer built around four things:

  • How they've handled pressure in past roles. Not whether they've been in high pressure situations, since almost every healthcare worker has, but how they actually responded. We ask for specifics from past supervisors and candidates themselves, not just a general sense of "handles stress well."
  • Communication style, especially handoffs. In clinical settings particularly, a huge share of errors and friction trace back to how information moves between shifts and roles. We look at how a candidate communicates with other clinicians, not just with patients.
  • Reliability signals from past assignments. Attendance history, how a candidate left previous roles, and whether they've completed contract terms in full or exited early. This is the closest thing to a direct predictor of whether someone will show up and stay.
  • Setting alignment. A candidate who thrives in a high volume, fast turnover environment may struggle in a slower paced, relationship heavy setting, and the reverse is just as true. We match pace and style to the actual environment, not just the job title.

None of this is guesswork. It comes from two decades of placement experience at Source EQ, the executive search firm behind Source EQ Staffing, where the same fit-first approach has driven over 500 successful healthcare placements since 2018. We simply brought that lens down into contract and shift-based staffing, where it's historically been missing.

EQ Factor vs. Standard Credential Checks

What is checked Standard credential check The EQ Factor
Verifies license and certificationsYesYes
Runs background checkYesYes
Assesses communication and handoff styleNot typicallyYes
Reviews reliability across past assignmentsRarely, beyond basic referencesYes, specifically for attendance and completion
Matches pace and style to the settingNoYes
Predicts likelihood of completing the contract termNoThis is the core goal

The point of this comparison isn't to say credential checks don't matter. They're the floor, and skipping them isn't an option in a regulated industry like healthcare. The EQ Factor is what sits above that floor, and it's the piece that most staffing models leave out entirely.

How It Works, in Three Steps

  1. We source from a screened, established network. Source EQ Staffing draws from a network of 100,000 plus healthcare professionals built over 20 plus years, which means most candidates already have a track record we can evaluate, rather than starting cold.
  2. We assess fit alongside credentials. Every candidate goes through the EQ Factor review, covering pressure response, communication style, reliability history, and setting alignment, in addition to the standard license and background verification.
  3. We present candidates who are ready on both fronts. By the time a candidate reaches you, they're credentialed to work the role and screened to actually fit it. That's the combination that reduces no-shows and early exits, not just the paperwork side.

Where the EQ Factor Comes From

The EQ Factor didn't start as a staffing concept. It started as the operating philosophy at Source EQ, the executive search firm founded by Christine Rossell, MBA, in 2018. Placing senior healthcare leaders taught a simple lesson that applies at every level of a healthcare organization: a candidate who looks perfect on paper can still be the wrong hire, and a candidate who doesn't have the flashiest resume can be exactly right, if the fit is real.

Source EQ built its reputation on getting that call right, placing more than 500 healthcare leaders since 2018. When we launched Source EQ Staffing to bring flexible contract coverage to clinical and non clinical roles, we didn't want to leave that lens behind just because the roles moved faster and the terms got shorter. The EQ Factor is how that same judgment shows up in a contract placement that needs to be filled in 48 hours instead of eight weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Is the EQ Factor a certification or a formal assessment tool?

It's a screening methodology we apply internally at Source EQ Staffing, built from two decades of placement experience. It's not a third party certification or a standardized test candidates take.

How is the EQ Factor actually measured for each candidate?

We evaluate past performance data, including reference conversations, attendance and completion history from prior assignments, and how candidates describe and demonstrate handling pressure and communication in clinical settings.

Does the EQ Factor replace license verification and background checks?

No. It sits on top of standard credentialing, which every candidate still completes. The EQ Factor addresses fit and reliability, not legal eligibility to work the role.

Does the EQ Factor apply to non clinical roles too?

Yes. We apply the same fit-first screening to non clinical and administrative placements, billing and coding staff, and behavioral health roles, not just RNs and physicians.

Why does fit matter more in contract roles than permanent ones?

Arguably it matters just as much in both, but the cost of a mismatch shows up faster in contract roles, since there's less time to course correct before the term ends or the placement falls through.

Where did the EQ Factor come from?

It grew out of Source EQ, our executive search firm, where the same fit-first approach has been behind more than 500 healthcare placements since 2018. We apply that same lens to contract staffing through Source EQ Staffing.

Can I ask specifically for EQ Factor screening on a role I'm hiring for?

Every candidate we present already goes through EQ Factor screening as a standard part of our process, so there's nothing separate to request. It's built into how we source and vet from the start.

Need coverage for a role like this?

Tell us the role, the location, and the start date — we'll come back with screened, credentialed candidates, fast.
